March Message from Mr. Mosca

Hello Everyone,
Hope you are surviving this endless winter season.  On the bright side March is one of the busiest and most exciting months of the school year with so many note-worthy student activities.  Yesterday we hosted another successful science fair and tomorrow is the opening of our spring drama production, The Dining Room.  I would like to thank all the community members who participated as judges in the science fair and want to invite everyone to the play, which runs Thursday through Saturday, March 13-15.  Refer to our website for times and ticket information.

Our Pops concert will be on Tuesday, March 18th in the gym and we will be honoring our French, Spanish and Latin National Honor Societies Inductees in the library on Wednesday, March 19th.  As always, your attendance and support of our students and their activities are sincerely appreciated.

The most exciting news to report is that part A of our application to the International Baccalaureate organization was accepted today.  Part B is due in June and we will prepare for an IB site visit in the fall.  Last night I had a chance to speak to many parents about IB at the PTO meeting.  We will also be presenting our second IB forum on Tuesday, April 8th at 6:30 in the GHS library.  We look forward to your attendance.  If you have any questions regarding IB, do not hesitate to call me at GHS.

Finally I want to mention that staff members will be contacting you to invite you to a variety of activities over the next several weeks.  Through these activities we hope to further enhance school and family partnerships to support each student.  Some of these activities may be held Friday, April 4.  Others may be after school or during the evening.  To accommodate this effort, there will be NO regularly scheduled classes on Friday, April 4th.

I hope to see you at the many upcoming events.  Hopefully we'll see spring on March 20th.

Best Wishes,
Chris Mosca

Additional Information from Mr. Mosca
Hello Everyone,
I want to remind you that Wednesday March 26th and April 2nd, the high school will be releasing at 11:15 a.m. for professional development.  Cold lunches and one entre will be available.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

I also want to mention that on Wednesday,April 2nd we will be required to administer the Maine High School Assessment Math and Science Augmentation Tests.  This is in order to meet federal requirements in accordance with No Child Left Behind legislation.  According to the Maine Department of Education, the tests " will focus on the Performance Indicators of the Maine Learning Results not covered or lightly covered by the SAT."  Since 2006, the SAT is required for all juniors and will be given at GHS on Saturday, May 3rd.  Additional information on the SAT will be sent at a later date.

Both the SAT and the Augmentation tests will only effect juniors.  Testing on April 2nd will run from 7:45 to 11:15.  It is imperative that all juniors participate in these assessments.  Your support in ensuring that juniors attend on April 2nd and participate is greatly appreciated.

We are also excited to be hosting a group of students from Mexico who will be accompanied by Margaret Irwin, our Fullbright Exchange teacher.  The students will be here from Saturday March 16 until Friday March 28.  We look forward to their arrival.

As I mentioned in the 3/12 message, there are no regularly scheduled classes Friday April 4th.  I also want to let you know that the student/parent teacher activities that will be held in the weeks ahead are not coordinated through advisories.  Although every teacher will be participating, activities may not involve every student.  This is the second year we have used this approach based on parent and student surveys and faculty feedback over the last several years.  In May we plan to send you an electronic survey to assess this program.  Your thoughts will be most welcomed and appreciated.

Sincerely,
Chris Mosca
