"Language and communication are at the heart of human experience, whether communication takes place face-to-face, in writing, or across the centuries through the reading of literature. Maine people must have the linguistic and cultural skills to communicate successfully in a pluralistic society at home and abroad."
-- State of Maine Learning Results
You needn't look far to see that languages other than English are not "foreign!"
•Many jobs in the United States--and right here in Maine!--require proficiency in another language. In many more jobs, being skilled in another language may not be a job requirement, but is a definite advantage!
•Many companies deal with other countries or have branches overseas, making knowledge of another language--and culture--essential for anyone who wants to have greater opportunities available.
•Studying another language and culture helps us to know our own even better. SAT scores have been shown to be higher for students who study another language.
•The personal benefits of learning another language--whether the increase in the ease and enjoyment of your travels or your fuller enjoyment of the arts--should not be overlooked.
•Of great importance, too, is the role learning another language plays in the development of receptive attitudes toward diversity.
In addition to learning a second language, why not try a third? Once you have become skilled at the concepts and strategies of language learning by progressing in your first "foreign" language, you can add to your repertoire by applying that knowledge to a third language!
