Pre- Engineering -- Course Description
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra II
A study of the fundamental concepts, devices, and applications of electronic components and controllers utilized on industrial equipment. Students will work towards developing a complete understanding of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC - an industrial computer in the simplest form). They will learn how to use software to develop the ladder logic that makes a PLC run. (These controllers work using Boolean Algebra.) Small machine cells will be constructed, controlled and monitored during the semester course, with the goal of each student developing a simple machine that is controlled by a PLC. A student interested in engineering would take this course.
Benchmarks: Students will use mathematical, scientific, and technological tools to design and apply solutions to a personal or community problem. Interpret and analyze technological data in the problem solving process. Modify existing computer programs to solve technical challenges of daily living.
