Ribbon Cutting
Printer-Friendly Version
And now the ribbon cutting
by Melissa Skahan

I’d like to invite Amy Young and the Greely Alumni that she was able to interview: Phil Chase, Barbara Garsoe, Herb Foster, Bill and Evelyn Frye Thurston, Norma Seekins, Faye Bolduc, and Rita Drew

Amy is a senior at GHS who chose to interview alumni as her senior capstone project. She reviewed old school records and Phyllis Sweetser’s book, and visited the Cumberland Historical Society with Carolyn Small. I had the pleasure of tagging along for those interviews. Amy asked,” What was a typical day like at Greely Institute?” and “What makes our community a special place?”

The stories were remarkable. We heard about Mr. Crandall , senior trips to NYC, neighborhood schools, only one school bus, basketball in the annex with chicken wire around the woodstove, sledding down Main Street, Cumberland Junction, and courses like Agriculture and Manual Labor.

What struck me was how much has remained the same.  We still have wonderful teachers, strong schooling, and great community.
This ribbon cutting symbolizes the continuation of that Greely Tradition. To cut the ribbon will be Amy Young of the Class of 2006 and Christine Burr Blanchard of the Class of 1933.
Thank you to Don Foster, Pam Ames, Amy Young, Peg Hughes, Josh Turina and Kevin Foster of the
the Cumberland Fire Explorer's Club. Special thanks to Susan Campbell for the spectacular replica cake and to Greely Alumni Class of 1969 Bruce Bailey of Bailey Sign Co. for donating the banner.
